On Nov.4, 2022 at approximately 6:22 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of Anaheim Street and Walnut Avenue regarding an injury traffic collision, which resulted in the death of a male adult.

Upon arrival, officers located a male adult being treated at the scene by Long Beach Fire Department personnel. He was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries where he remained until ultimately succumbing to his injuries on Nov.13, 2022.

Through their preliminary investigation, detectives learned that the decedent was traveling norhtbound on a bicycle in the east crosswalk of Walnut Avenue at Anaheim Street when he was struck by a white sedan that was traveling westbound on Anaheim Street in the number one lane. The driver failed to stop and fled the scene the scene traveling westbound on Anaheim Street.

The decedent was identified as Samuel Juarez Rivera, a 71-year-old resident of Long Beach.

At this time, it is unknown if speed, distracted driving or impaired driving were factors in the collision. Detectives are working to determine if the sedan driver ran a red light at the time of the collision.
