The LBPD is investigating a possible road rage and driving under the influence incident that resulted in a pursuit and outside agency officer-involved shooting.

On July 22, 2026 at approximately 10:07 a.m., Long Beach Police Department officers responded to assist the Long Beach Fire Department with a vehicle driving erratically in front of an LBFD vehicle transporting a patient in the area of Palo Verde Avenue and Willow Street.

Responding officers located the vehicle nearby, which continued driving erratically, resulting in vehicle pursuit. The male adult subject stopped the vehicle and fled on foot in the area of Katella Avenue and Cherry Street, in the City of Los Alamitos.

Officers observed the subject to be in possession of a machete. They established a perimeter. SWAT resources were activated. Nearby police agencies responded to assist with the incident.

Officers made attempts to safely resolve and de-escalate the situation. A use of force occurred including use of 40mm less-lethal rounds and K9 contact.

An outside agency officer-involved shooting occurred. For further on the officer-involved shooting, contact the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

No LBPD personnel discharged their service weapons.
