On Sunday, October 2nd at approximately 10:13 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 5200 block of East 25th Street regarding a report of a person pointing a gun at another person, which resulted in an officer involved shooting.

The preliminary information indicated that a male adult suspect was inside of a home where he had pointed a gun at a relative and threatened to shoot them.

Upon arrival, officers observed the suspect’s relatives leaving the home and began establishing a perimeter. At this time, they encountered the suspect at the rear of the residence holding a rifle. Officers immediately issued commands to the suspect to drop the firearm, however, the suspect refused to comply and surrender and pointed the rifle in the direction of responding officers.

An officer-involved shooting occurred at this time. The suspect was not struck by gunfire. He then retreated into the home. Officers established the perimeter, activated the LBPD Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, and advised nearby neighbors to evacuate and/or shelter in place.

Negotiators arrived on scene, initiated contact with the suspect, and began utilizing de-escalation techniques for his peaceful surrender, but the suspect still refused to leave the residence.

At approximately 4:25p.m., LBPD SWAT made entry into the residence and safely took the suspect into custody without incident.

The suspect suffers from pre-existing medical conditions and was transported to a local hospital by the Long Beach Fire Department to be cleared for booking.

The suspect was identified as 55-year-old Michael Eugene Amacher of Long Beach who was arrested for multiple counts of assault with a firearm and he will be booked upon receiving medical clearance.

Neither the suspect, LBPD officers nor any community members suffered any injuries during the incident.

Officers seized one firearm and one replica firearm at the scene.

All officers were equipped with body-worn cameras. LBPD is in the process of reviewing the footage and will make that available to the public as soon as possible.

As with all officer-involved shooting incidents, the Department will be conducting a full and thorough multi-level review of the incident. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent investigation of the incident.
