On March 16, 2020, at approximately 8:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the 4600 block of Whitewood Avenue regarding a report of a potential suicide, which resulted in the death of a female adult and the arrest of a male adult.

As officers were responding to the scene, they received updated information from dispatch that a murder may have occurred in the rear unit of the residence. When officers arrived, they encountered a male adult suspect in front of the back house. The male adult suspect immediately surrendered to officers and was taken into custody without incident.

Officers then entered the back residence, they observed a female adult victim on the ground, unresponsive and not breathing. The Long Beach Fire Department responded and determined the victim was deceased. The victim has been identified as Chelsea Smith, a 27-year-old resident of Long Beach.

Through their investigation, detectives determined that the male suspect and female victim were in a dating relationship and lived together in the back residence. There was an altercation between the couple that resulted in injuries to the victim’s upper torso.

The male adult suspect was identified as Colin Wolters, a 36-year-old resident of Long Beach. Wolters was booked for murder and is currently being held in the Long Beach City Jail on a $2,000,000 bail.

Detectives anticipate presenting their case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office later this week.
