Update 5/6/2021:
On May 6, 2021 at approximately 8:30 a.m., Special Investigation Detectives located and arrested Charles Ray Jones, a 44-year-old individual experiencing homelessness in Long Beach. He was arrested on the 100 block of the Promenade. Jones was booked on one count of murder and is currently being held on $2,000,000 bail in the Long Beach City Jail.
Through their investigation, detectives discovered evidence linking Jones to the fatal Oct. 6, 2020 stabbing of a male adult victim.
The victim has been identified as 41-year-old Nilton Cardoso, an individual experiencing homelessness in Long Beach.
Cardoso and Jones were known to each other and may have been involved in a dispute when the assault occurred. The investigation remains active as detectives determine whether more persons were involved in the attack.

Original News Release 10/7/2020:
On October 6, 2020 at approximately 8:50 p.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Ocean Boulevard and The Promenade North regarding a person down, which resulted in the death of a male adult.
When officers arrived, the victim was being treated by the Long Beach Fire Department. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The preliminary information suggests a physical altercation may have occurred between the victim and one or more suspects, resulting in the victim being stabbed multiple times in the upper torso with a sharp object. Detectives do not have a description of the suspect(s) or last direction of travel.
At this time, the victim is only being identified as a 41-year-old male experiencing homelessness in Long Beach, pending notification to next of kin by the office of the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner.
Detectives are actively looking for additional evidence and witnesses to determine a motive and identify a suspect(s).
