Update 8/11/23 at 4:30 p.m.:
On Aug. 11, 2023, detectives from the Special Investigations Division located and arrested two male adults for murder and robbery, along with two male juveniles for assault with a deadly weapon and robbery. The arrests are related to the murder of Canaan Oryema Okatch, a 26-year-old male resident of Long Beach.
Detectives located and arrested two juvenile suspects, a 17-year-old male resident of Long Beach and a 16-year-old male resident of Long Beach, near the 800 block of Maine Avenue. Both juveniles were booked for one count of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of robbery. They are currently being held without bail.
Detectives also arrested Luis Jesus Hernandez-Perez, an 18-year-old resident of Long Beach. Hernandez-Perez was arrested near the 400 block of West 9th Street. He was booked for murder and is being held on $2,000,000 bail.
LBPD detectives, the U.S. Marshals Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force and the Lakewood (WA) Police Department, coordinated the arrest of Dangelo Antolin Rodriguez, an 18-year-old resident of Lakewood, Washington. Rodriguez was arrested near the 4800 block of 123rd Street, in the city of Lakewood. With the assistance of the U.S. Marshals, Rodriguez will be extradited from Lakewood, Washington to Long Beach, California. He is currently being held on $3,000,000 bail.
Detectives will present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration early next week. While the investigation remains ongoing, at this time, Homicide detectives believe the motive to be gang related and robbery related.

Original News Release 7/12/23 at 3:00 p.m.:
Homicide detectives are investigating a murder that occurred on July 11, 2023 in the 900 block of Maine Avenue.
At approximately 11:03 p.m., officers responded to the 900 block of Maine Avenue regarding multiple gunshots heard in the area.
Upon arrival, officers located a male adult victim on the ground near Loma Vista Drive and Corvo Court, who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Officers rendered medical aid and attempted life-saving measures until being relieved by Long Beach Fire Department personnel. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Homicide Detectives responded to the scene to investigate the incident. Through their preliminary investigation, detectives determined that several unknown male suspects approached the victim and began physically assaulting him. During the assault, one of the suspects fired multiple gunshots toward the victim, which ultimately resulted in the victim's death. The suspects fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival.
The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner will work to identify the victim and notify the next of kin.
The investigation to determine the motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
