Homicide detectives arrest a suspect responsible for the June 16, 2023, murder of a male adult.
Homicide Detectives have identified Roland Barber, a 40-year-old resident of Long Beach for the June 16, 2023 murder of David Nevarez.
Roland Barber was arrested on June 29, 2023 regarding a shooting that occurred the same day. While Barber was in custody, detectives gathered evidence identifying him as the suspect for the June 16th murder of David Nevarez. Barber has been charged with murder and is currently being held on $3,000,000 bail.
On August 3, 2023, Special Investigation detectives arrested Maytte Barber, a 35-year-old resident of Long Beach. Detectives located and arrested Maytte near the 13000 block of Downey Avenue in the City of Downey. She was booked for one count of accessory to murder and is being held on $1,000,000 bail.
Additionally, on August 3, 2023, detectives arrested Edward Wayne Williams, a 59-year-old resident of Long Beach. Detectives located and arrested Williams near the intersection of Stearns Street and Bellflower Avenue in the City of Long Beach. He was booked for one count of accessory to murder and is being held on $1,000,000 bail.
Detectives believe both Barber and Nevarez were not known to each other, however on June 16, they were involved in a dispute, which escalated into a shooting, which resulted in Nevarez’s death.

Original News Release 6/17/2023 at 12:45p.m.:
On June 16, 2023, at approximately 9:58 p.m., officers responded to the 5500 block of Ackerfield Avenue regarding a report of a hit shooting which resulted in the death of a male adult.
Upon arrival, officers located a male adult victim suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. Officers rendered aid until being relieved by Long Beach Fire Department personnel who subsequently transported the victim to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injury.
Homicide Detectives responded to the scene to investigate the incident. The preliminary investigation indicates the victim was outside a residence when an unknown suspect shot him.
At this time, no suspect information is available and the investigation to determine the motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
The identification of the male adult victim and notification to the next of kin will be conducted by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
