On June 23, 2021 at approximately 10:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to a shots call after several 9-1-1 callers reported gunshots in the area of South Street and Ackerfield Avenue, which resulted in the death of a male adult and the hospitalization of another male adult.
The first arriving officers located a male adult victim in front of an apartment complex suffering from at least one gunshot wound to his upper torso. Officers rendered medical aid until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived and determined the victim to be deceased at the scene.
Officers located a second male adult victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower torso. The second victim was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Based on the preliminary investigation, the two shooting victims were gathered with two other acquaintances in front of an apartment complex on Ackerfield Avenue when a dark-colored sedan approached. An occupant from inside the sedan began shooting at the group, unprovoked, before fleeing the area in the vehicle with other occupants. The vehicle was last seen heading northbound toward South Street.
The decedent has been identified as Kenneth Cornett, a 27-year-old resident of Bell Gardens.
The investigation remains ongoing and is being investigated as gang-related.
