While investigating the June 5th shooting in the 5500 block of Atlantic Avenue that resulted in the death of two male adults, homicide detectives identified a third subject who was present at the time of the shooting.
On June 6, 2019, 26-year-old Marquise Harris of Memphis, Tennessee, was arrested at a motel in the City of Garden Grove. Detectives extended the investigation by serving search warrants at Garden Grove and Los Angeles area hotels, which led to the recovery of two firearms believed to be involved in the shootings, approximately two pounds of marijuana, and approximately $15,000 in cash. All recovered evidence will be examined by the Long Beach Police Department’s Forensic Science Services Division.
The investigation revealed Devaris Watson, a 29-year-old resident of Memphis, Tennessee*, Harris, and Kevin Williams engaged in a transaction involving the sale of a large quantity of marijuana for cash. Evidence suggests Williams and Watson disagreed over the terms of the deal and each brandished a firearm and shot at each other inside the vehicle, resulting in their death. Harris was not injured and drove Watson to a Gardena hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
On June 10, 2019, the case was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office, who filed two counts of carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle against Harris, and one count of possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute. Harris is currently being held at a Los Angeles County Correctional Facility on $35,000 bail.
This incident was determined to be an isolated occurrence related to the illegal marijuana trade.
*The original release states Watson was from the State of Mississippi, the follow-up investigation revealed he was from Memphis Tennessee.
