Update 1/22/22

On Jan. 21, 2022, at approximately 2:33 p.m., detectives from the Special Investigations Division located and arrested Salvador Rivera, a 33-year-old resident of Wilmington.

Rivera was arrested during a traffic stop near the intersection of Riverside Drive and Roswell Avenue in the City of Chino. Rivera was sought by detectives after they gathered significant evidence connecting him to the Jan. 16, 2022 shooting death of the victim who has been identified as James Lopez, a 39-year-old resident of the City of Bell.

Rivera has been booked on one count of murder and is currently being held in the Long Beach City Jail on $2,000,000 bail.

Original News Release 1/17/22

On Jan. 16, 2022, at approximately 10:15 p.m., officers responded to a report of a shooting that occurred inside an open business near the 1900 block of Willow Street, which resulted in the death of a male adult. 
 
Upon arrival, officers located a male adult suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Officers rendered life-saving aid until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived on the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. 
 
Homicide detectives were notified and responded to the scene after the victim was pronounced deceased. Through their preliminary investigation, detectives discovered the victim, who was an employee of the business, was involved in a verbal dispute with a customer, a male adult suspect. The argument escalated into a shooting and the suspect discharged multiple gunshots toward the victim. The suspect was last seen exiting the business and fleeing the scene on foot in an unknown direction.  

The identification of the victim and notification to next of kin will be conducted by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner–Coroner’s Office.
