On June 13, 2021, at approximately 11:08 p.m., officers were dispatched to a report of shots heard at the intersection of 20th Street and Wesley Drive, which resulted in the death of one male adult and the injury of another male adult.
Upon arrival, responding officers located a male adult victim suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper torso lying in the roadway on the 1300 block of Wesley Drive. Officers immediately began rendering medical aid until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived and ultimately determined the victim to be deceased at the scene.
A second male adult victim was located nearby suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper torso and was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
Through their preliminary investigation, detectives learned two unknown male suspects approached the victims on foot. There was a brief exchange of words before at least one of the suspects produced a handgun and shot the victims. The suspects were last seen fleeing the area on foot westbound on Wesley Drive toward Orange Avenue.
The two victims are not known to each other and were involved in separate activities when confronted by the suspects. The incident remains under investigation; however, at this time, detectives are investigating the incident as gang-related.
The decedent is only being identified as a 37-year-old resident of Long Beach pending notification to the next of kin by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
