Update 6/20/21:

On June 20, 2021 at approximately 4:50 a.m., detectives from the Special Investigations Division located and arrested Ernesto Contreras, a 43-year-old resident of Long Beach.

Contreras was arrested in his vehicle in the 800 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue after Homicide detectives collected evidence of his involvement in the June 19, 2021 shooting death of the victim who is only being identified as a 34-year-old resident of Long Beach, pending notification of the next of kin.

Contreras was booked on one count of murder and is currently being held in the Long Beach City Jail on $2,000,000 bail.

Orignal News Release 6/19/21

On June 19, 2021, at approximately 2:03 p.m., officers were dispatched to an unknown trouble call in the 1000 block of East Anaheim Street. While officers were enroute to the location, they learned a shooting victim had been transported to a local hospital by his associates. The shooting victim later succumbed to his injuries while being treated at the hospital.

Responding officers located a crime scene in the 1000 block of East Anaheim Street and began locating witnesses.  Through their preliminary investigation, detectives learned there was a brief exchange of words between the victim and the suspect before the suspect produced a handgun and shot the victim. The suspect was last seen fleeing the area on foot.

The incident remains under investigation; however, at this time, detectives are investigating the incident as gang related.

At this time, the decedent is only being identified as a 34-year-old resident of Long Beach pending notification of the next of kin.
