On Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at noon, Long Beach Police responded to Del Amo Boulevard and East 49th Street regarding an injury traffic collision. When officers arrived, they discovered a 1995 Saturn SL1 had collided with a tree.
The preliminary investigation indicated the Saturn, being driven by 71-year-old Matthew Clifford Brown of Long Beach, was traveling westbound on Del Amo Boulevard. Witnesses indicated the driver appeared to be leaning back in the seat as if he was "passed out," as the vehicle proceeded through a red light at Atlantic Avenue at a slow speed. The vehicle continued west on Del Amo Boulevard and over the raised median, just east of East 49th Street. The vehicle continued west and traveled a short distance westbound in the eastbound lanes until it went over the south curb of Del Amo Boulevard, colliding into a tree, head on. The driver may have suffered a medical emergency at the time of the incident. There were no passengers in the vehicle and no other vehicles were involved.
After the collision, the driver appeared to be unconscious in the vehicle. Long Beach Fire Department Paramedics responded, removed the driver from the vehicle, performed CPR, and pronounced the driver deceased at the scene. The Los Angeles County Coroner will determine the official cause of death.
