On Sunday, April 13, 2014, the Long Beach Police Department's Traffic Section in cooperation with the “Avoid the 100” multiple agency DUI Task Force conducted a DUI Saturation Patrol throughout Long Beach.

The operation, which ran from 6:00 p.m., Sunday night, until 2:00 a.m., Monday morning, included officers from Long Beach Police Department, Gardena Police Department, Torrance Police Department, Manhattan Beach Police Department, Vernon Police Department, Redondo Beach Police Department, Palos Verdes Estates Police Department, University of California at Los Angeles Police Department, and El Segundo Police Department. During the eight-hour operation, these additional police officers patrolled Long Beach looking for impaired drivers and produced the following results:

• 10 DUI arrests
• 58 vehicle traffic stops
• 18 administered Standardized Field Sobriety Tests

DUI Saturation Patrols are a vital component in the fight against impaired drivers. Driving under the influence can impact the economy in addition to the pain and suffering of those immediately affected. Conservatively, a fatality has a $1.4 million impact, an injury $70,000, and a crash that only damages property averages nearly $9000. The estimated cost for a first time misdemeanor driving under the influence conviction is over $15,000.

DUI Saturation Patrols have been proven to reduce impaired driving related collisions by removing these drivers from our streets. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Safety Administration.
