On May 5, 2023, detectives from the Special Investigations Division located and arrested Jason Santiago Gonzalez, a 24-year-old resident of Long Beach, for the April 16, 2023 attempted murder of five Long Beach Police officers.
Detectives located Gonzalez in the City of Gardena and subsequently took him into custody. Gonzalez was booked for five counts of attempted murder, one count of negligent discharge of a firearm, possession of a loaded firearm, possession of methamphetamine for sale. Bail was set at $5,000,000.
Through the investigation, detectives believe that on April 16, while officers were investigating an earlier shooting in the area of Market Street and Cedar Avenue, the suspect of this incident fled the scene and was barricaded in a nearby residence. That suspect was later identified as David Santiago Gonzalez, a 30-year-old resident of Long Beach, and Jason Gonzalez’s older brother. Officers were attempting to have David Gonzalez surrender, when Jason Gonzalez fired multiple rounds at officers from a nearby location.
"This unacceptable act of violence committed against our police officers serves as a stark reminder of the inherent danger in the law enforcement profession," said Chief Wally Hebeish. "I commend the brave officers who risk their lives every day to keep our community safe.”
Detectives will continue to evaluate all evidence and investigative leads. The case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration early next week.
