Traffic stop leads to the recovery of two firearms and methamphetamine

On Feb. 3, 2023, at approximately 6:16 p.m., officers working near Arbor Street and Virginia Avenue pulled over a vehicle for a vehicle code violation. 

Officers contacted the driver, determined he was currently on probation, and conducted a search of the vehicle consistent with the terms of the driver's probation. During their search of the vehicle, officers located a stolen loaded firearm and several rounds of ammunition. The suspect was arrested and transported to Long Beach City for booking. Following the initial search, officers furthered the investigation by conducting an additional search at the suspect’s motel room. During this search, officers recovered an additional firearm, an extended magazine, and approximately three pounds of methamphetamine. 

The suspect was identified as Ricky Mitchell, a 41-year-old resident of Long Beach who was booked on one count of carrying a loaded handgun as not the registered owner, one count of felon in possession of a firearm, one count of a prohibited possessor in possession of ammunition, one count of carrying a stolen loaded firearm, and one count of carrying a concealed weapon. Bail was set at $35,000.
