As part of our ongoing commitment to external communications and providing valuable information to our community, the Department posts preliminary information about incidents that occurred the previous evening, including shootings and stabbings, as well as any other LBPD updates to the Department’s homepage and on the “News” tab of the Department’s website. This page will be updated as new incidents occur.
- East DET Officers Arrest Prohibited Possessor: On Sept. 28, 2023, at approximately 5:01 p.m., East DET officers were near the 1200 block of Newport Avenue attempting to complete a probation compliance check on a known parolee. When officers attempted to contact the parolee, he fled from the officers, resulting in a brief foot pursuit, which concluded when officers apprehended and detained the suspect. A search warrant service was executed at the suspect’s residence in the 1200 block of Newport Avenue, where officers located and recovered a sawed-off shotgun, several rounds of ammunition, narcotics, tools and devices to commit fraud and forgery, and stolen motorcycle parts. The suspect was transported to Long Beach City jail for booking. The suspect was identified as Mark Anthony King Jr., a 37-year-old resident of Long Beach. King Jr. was booked on one count of possession of a controlled substance, one count of resisting arrest, one count of identity theft, one count of theft of property by Postal Service, and an open warrant. Bail was set at no-bail. The investigation is ongoing.

Officers Investigate a No-Hit Shooting - Today at approximately 4:44 a.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Long Beach Boulevard and 15th Street regarding an assault with a deadly weapon. Upon arrival, officers contacted an uninjured female adult victim who stated she was in the city of Compton when she was approached by an unknown male suspect, who pointed a firearm at her. The victim managed to flee the scene in her vehicle into Long Beach. As the victim approached the 1600 block of San Francisco, she observed the same suspect in a vehicle, who then subsequently discharged a firearm towards the victim’s direction, striking her vehicle. The victim fled in her vehicle and called police. No injuries were reported, the motive for the shooting and suspect information is unknown. The investigation is ongoing.

Officers Investigate a Stabbing - Today at approximately 5:47 a.m., officers were dispatched to a local hospital regarding a stabbing victim. Upon arrival, officers contacted a male adult victim with non-life-threatening stab wounds to the upper and lower body, who stated he was with friends in the area of 14th Street and Gaviota Avenue when an unknown male adult suspect shot in his direction with a BB gun. After a brief verbal altercation, a fight ensued between the victim and suspect, which escalated when the suspect stabbed the victim. The suspect fled on foot towards an unknown direction prior to officers’ arrival. No suspect information is known, and the investigation is ongoing.
