Update 7:35 p.m.

  • Police Investigation - 68th Street and Orizaba Avenue: On Sept. 19, 2023, at approximately 2:27 p.m., officers responded to the 6700 block of Orizaba Avenue regarding a home invasion robbery call. Upon arrival, officers were directed to McKinley Elementary School where the original calling party was said to be in possession of a sledgehammer. The preliminary investigation indicates that the subject climbed a fence and entered the school parking lot with a small sledgehammer. While attempting to enter the campus grounds by climbing a second fence, he was pulled down and detained by a group of male adults. At some point, he became unresponsive. Once at the school, officers were directed to the male adult subject who was being detained by a citizen. Upon contacting the subject, officers handcuffed him; they recognized he was unresponsive and rendered medical aid. Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and determined the subject to be deceased. Cause of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County Department of the Medical Examiner. Due to the fact the man was handcuffed, this incident is being investigated as an in-custody death. No force was used. Homicide detectives are on scene investigating and the investigation is ongoing.

This information is preliminary and is intended for early information use rather than being a formal investigative report.
