As part of our ongoing commitment to external communications and providing valuable information to our community, the Department posts preliminary information about incidents that occurred the previous evening, including shootings and stabbings, as well as any other LBPD updates to the Department’s homepage and on the “News” tab of the Department’s website. This page will be updated as new incidents occur.
Update 5/31/2023 at 1:30 p.m. - additional information updated in bold:
- On May 31, 2023 at approximately 9:50am., officers were in the area of the 2100 block of Williams St and heard presumed gunfire. Upon arrival officers located evidence of a shooting. The preliminary investigation suggests that the suspect is still in the area and barricaded inside the building. LBPD officers have established a perimeter and nearby residents have evacuated and/or sheltered in place. The situation is fluid, and the investigation is ongoing. The incident is being investigated as a suicide. The scene is now cleared.
Here’s a recap of incidents occurring last night:
- Officers investigate a person with a gun call - On May 30, 2023 at approximately 8:13 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 5000 of Atlantic Avenue regarding a person with a gun. Upon arrival, North DET Officers contacted a male adult suspect who matched the description given by the calling party. Officers attempted to contact the suspect, however he ran away. After a short foot pursuit officers caught up to the suspect, arrested him, and subsequently transported him to Long Beach City Jail for booking. During the foot pursuit, the suspect revealed a firearm and threw it over a nearby fence, which was recovered by officers. The suspect was identified as Jose Francisco Morales, a 27-year-old resident of the City of Long Beach, who was booked with carrying a loaded firearm in public, prohibited possessor in possession of a firearm, altering a gun’s ID information, prohibited possessor in possession of ammunition, brandishing of a firearm, and an open warrant. Bail is set at no bail.
