As part of our ongoing commitment to external communications and providing valuable information to our community, the Department posts preliminary information about incidents that occurred the previous evening, including shootings and stabbings, as well as any other LBPD updates to the Department’s homepage and on the “News” tab of the Department’s website. This page will be updated as new incidents occur.
Here’s a recap of incidents occurring last night:

No-hit shooting – 100 block of Cherry Avenue - On May 1, 2024, at approximately 5:56 p.m., officers responded to a park in the 100 block of Cherry Avenue regarding a person with a gun, later determined to be a negligent discharge. The preliminary investigation indicates the male adult suspect fired shots in the park. Officers arrested the suspect, identified as James Webster, a 34-year-old person experiencing homelessness. He was transported to Long Beach City Jail and booked for prohibited possessor in possession of ammunition and a firearm, disorderly conduct, willful discharge of a firearm in a grossly negligent manner, and probation violation. Bail was set at $35,000. Officers recovered two firearms at the scene. No injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.
- Hit Shooting – 500 block of Cerritos Avenue - On May 1, 2024, at approximately 10:11 p.m., officers were dispatched to a shooting in the 500 block of Cerritos Avenue. The preliminary investigation indicates an unknown suspect shot the male adult victim. The suspect(s) fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival. The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the upper body. Officers rendered medical aid until the arrival of Long Beach Fire personnel who transported the victim to a local hospital in critical condition. Suspect information and motive are under investigation. Detectives responded to the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
