As part of our ongoing commitment to external communications and providing valuable information to our community, the Department posts preliminary information about incidents that occurred the previous evening, including shootings and stabbings, as well as any other LBPD updates to the Department’s homepage and on the “News” tab of the Department’s website. This page will be updated as new incidents occur.

Officers Investigate a No Hit Shooting: On May 9, 2023, at approximately 6:50 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 800 block of Orange Avenue regarding a no hit shooting. The investigation revealed, two sedans were at the intersection of Orange Avenue and Hellman Street. A male adult occupant from one sedan exited the vehicle and fired at the other sedan. Both vehicles fled the area before police arrived. Officers located evidence, including bullet casings and strike marks indicating a shooting had occurred. Suspect information and the motive for the shooting is under investigation. The investigation is ongoing.

Officers Investigate a Homicide: On May 10, 2023, at approximately 6:32 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 6200 block of California Avenue regarding a hit shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a male adult victim with life-threatening injuries to his upper body. The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived. The male victim was transported to a local hospital, were he later succumbed to his injuries. The preliminary investigation revealed that a known male adult suspect entered the victim’s residence and shot the victim. The investigation is ongoing. A news release detailing the incident is forthcoming.

Officers Investigate a Homicide: On May 9, 2023, at approximately 11:32 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 2200 block of Lewis Avenue regarding a hit shooting. Upon arrival, officers contacted three victims, one 12-year-old boy, one 13-year-old girl, and one 14-year-old girl. The male victim was located with a life-threatening gunshot wound to the upper body. Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and transported the victim to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The 14-year-old victim suffered a non-life-threatening injury to her lower body. The 13-year-old victim was uninjured. Suspects fled the scene before officers arrived. Officers located evidence indicating a shooting had occurred. The preliminary investigation revealed that the juvenile victims were walking on the sidewalk when they were approached by the suspect vehicle, containing at least two male suspects. An unknown number of suspect(s) shot at the victims. The investigation ongoing. A news release detailing the incident is forthcoming. Out of an abundance of caution we will have an increased police presence in the area. The Neighborhood Safety Bike Team and the West Division Patrol Resource Officer have also conducted community engagement in the area. “The shooting that took place last night is absolutely devastating. A young boy’s life has been cut short due to an intolerable act of gun violence”, said Chief Wally Hebeish. “While we mourn this loss as a community, our officers will not stop working to locate and arrest those responsible for this tragedy.”
