Here’s a recap of incidents occurring last night:

  • Last night, at approximately 8:14 p.m., officers responded to the area of East 7th Street and Atlantic Avenue regarding a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers contacted a male adult victim suffering from a stab wound to the upper body. The victim, a person experiencing homelessness, stated he returned to his tent to discover it occupied by a male adult suspect, resulting in an altercation that escalated to the stabbing. The Long Beach Fire Department responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Responding officers located the suspect walking nearby, holding scissors. Officers attempted to deescalate the situation however the suspect was uncooperative. Officers deployed less-lethal munitions, a moderate force option, and safely took the suspect into custody. The suspect was transported to a local hospital and was cleared for booking. The suspect was identified as Paul Stewart Hugh Jr, a 32-year-old person experiencing homelessness in Long Beach, booked for one count of residential burglary, one count of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of resisting a public officer, and one count of driving with a suspended license regarding a warrant. Bail was set at $125,000. The investigation is ongoing.
