As part of our ongoing commitment to external communications and providing valuable information to our community, the Department posts preliminary information about incidents that occurred the previous evening, including shootings and stabbings, as well as any other LBPD updates to the Department’s homepage and on the “News” tab of the Department’s website. This page will be updated as new incidents occur.
- No-Hit Shooting – Pacific Coast Highway and Chestnut Avenue - On Feb. 29, 2024, at approximately 7:01 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Chestnut Avenue regarding a stolen vehicle report. Upon arrival, officers contactedan uninjured male adult victim. The preliminary investigation indicates the victim was standing next to his car when he was approached by two unknown male adult suspects. A brief verbal altercation occurred, which resulted in one of the suspects pointing a firearm at the victim. The victim immediately ran to safety. The victim heard a gunshot as the suspects fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle. No injuries were reported, and the investigation is on-going.

No-Hit Shooting – 16th Street and Locust Avenue - On Feb. 29, 2024, at approximately 7:33 p.m., officers responded to the area of 16th Street and Locust Avenue regarding a shots call. Upon arrival, officers located evidence, including bullet casings, indicating a shooting had occurred. No injuries were reported, no suspect information is known, and the motive for the shooting is unknown. The investigation is ongoing.
- No-Hit Shooting – Cedar Avenue and 21st Street - On Feb. 29, 2024, at approximately 7:48 p.m., officers responded to the area of Cedar Avenue and 21st Street regarding a fight with a shots call. Upon arrival, officers located a firearm and abullet casing near the scene, indicating a shooting had occurred. No injuries were reported, no suspect information is known, and the motive for the shooting is unknown. The investigation is ongoing.
- No-Hit Shooting – 23rd Street and Lime Avenue - On Feb. 29, 2024, at approximately 9:18 p.m., officers responded to the area of 23rd Street and Lime Avenue regarding a shot call. Upon arrival, officers contacted an uninjured male adult victim who stated he was engaged in a verbal dispute with a known male adult suspect, which escalated into a fight. After the fight ended, both parties walked away, however, the suspect retrieved a firearm from his residence and subsequently fired shots into the air. As officers were on scene, they located the suspect nearby and subsequently arrested him and transported to Long Beach City Jail for booking. The suspect was identified as Daniel Cortez, a 59-year-old resident of Long Beach, who was booked on one count of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of prohibited possessor in possession of a firearm, and one count of a prohibited possessor in possession of ammunition. Bail was set at $30,000.
- Hit-and-Run – 8th Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard - On March 1, 2024, at approximately 12:24 a.m., officers responded to the area of Martin Luther Ling Jr. Boulevard and 8th Street regarding a vehicle and pedestrian injury traffic collision. The preliminary investigation indicates a female adult pedestrian and her 4-month-old child in a stroller, were attempting to get into a vehicle when they were struck by a passing vehicle. Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded and transported both victims to a local hospital for their non-life-threating injuries, where they were listed in stable condition. The suspect fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival. At this time, no suspect information is available, and no other injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.
