LBPD Blotter - July 23, 2023

As part of our ongoing commitment to external communications and providing valuable information to our community, the Department posts preliminary information about incidents that occurred the previous evening, including shootings and stabbings, as well as any other LBPD updates to the Department’s homepage and on the “News” tab of the Department’s website. This page will be updated as new incidents occur.

Here’s a recap of incidents occurring last night:

  • Activation of SWAT personnel – 2300 block of Long Beach Boulevard - Today at approximately 5:51 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of Long Beach Boulevard regarding an assist fire call. The preliminary investigation suggests that a male adult suspect and female adult victim were engaged in a verbal altercation, which escalated when the suspect physically assaulted the victim.  When officers arrived on scene, the suspect barricaded himself in a vehicle and refused to comply with officer’s commands.  Officers established a perimeter, members of the SWAT team responded to the incident, and nearby residents evacuated and/or sheltered in place. After some time, the suspect complied with officers’ commands and was taken into custody without incident. The suspect was transported to a local hospital for an unrelated health condition; however, he will be transported to Long Beach City jail for booking following medical clearance. The investigation is ongoing.

  • Attempt Murder Arrest – Willow Street and Santa Fe Avenue - On July 22, 2023 at approximately 8:01 p.m., officers were dispatched to area of Santa Fe Avenue and Willow Street regarding a shooting. Upon arrival, officers contacted a male adult victim with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the upper body. Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital. The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was driving his vehicle southbound on Santa Fe Avenue when approached by a vehicle driven by an unknown male adult suspect. After a brief verbal exchange, the suspect discharged a firearm at the victim’s vehicle, striking the victim. The suspect fled towards an unknown direction prior to officer’s arrival. A short while later, officers observed a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle, in the area where the shooting occurred. Officers conducted a traffic stop and detained the driver. Through their investigation, officers discovered the driver of the vehicle was a suspect in the shooting. Officers arrested the suspect and transported him to Long Beach City jail for booking. The suspect was identified as Leon Shillingford, a 24-year-old resident of Redondo Beach, who was booked on attempted murder and a parole violation. Bail was set at $1,000,000.

  • Hit-Shooting – 1900 block of Luray Street - On July 22, 2023 at approximately 10:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1900 block of Luray Street regarding a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located evidence, including bullet casings, indicating a shooting occurred. While on scene, officers were notified that a shooting victim from the incident, a male adult, self-transported to an out of city hospital for his non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to the upper body. The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was engaged in a physical altercation with an unknown male suspect, which escalated when the suspect shot the victim. The suspect fled on foot towards an unknown direction prior to officers’ arrival. No other injuries were reported. Initially, it was believed two other victims were related to the incident, one victim with non-life-threatening injuries and another victim other who succumbed to their injuries; however, detectives determined the other victims were shot in the city of Carson and unrelated to the incident in the 1900 block of Luray Street. The investigation is ongoing.
