As part of our ongoing commitment to external communications and providing valuable information to our community, the Department posts preliminary information about incidents that occurred the previous evening, including shootings and stabbings, as well as any other LBPD updates to the Department’s homepage and on the “News” tab of the Department’s website. This page will be updated as new incidents occur.
Here’s a recap of incidents occurring last night:
- Officers investigate a hit shooting: On July 2, 2023, at approximately 2:13 a.m., officers responded to the 1500 block of West Burnett Street regarding a hit shooting. The preliminary investigation indicates an unknown suspect fired shots outside of a residence. A bullet went through the window frame, striking a 14-year-old male victim who was inside the home. The victim sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower body. The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived. Officers located evidence, including strike marks, indicating a shooting had occurred. Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported the victim to a local hospital in stable condition. Suspect information and the motive for the shooting is under investigation. The investigation is ongoing.
- Officers investigate a domestic violence with SWAT resources and arrest suspect: On July 1, 2023, at approximately 11:03 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 200 block of East Barclay Street regarding a domestic violence call. Upon arrival, officers located a female adult victim with a minor injury to her upper body. Officers additionally located the male adult suspect who threatened to stab himself with a broken bottle. The suspect fled into a garage and barricaded himself inside. Officers with SWAT training and negotiators responded. They attempted to deescalate the situation, but the suspect remained uncooperative and pointed a nail gun at officers. A use of force occurred including tear gas, less-lethal 40mm rounds, and a K9 contact. Officers took the suspect into custody. Long Beach Fire Department personnel provided medical aid to the victim and the suspect. Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported the suspect to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to be medically cleared prior to booking. The investigation is ongoing.
