As part of our ongoing commitment to external communications and providing valuable information to our community, the Department posts preliminary information about incidents that occurred the previous evening, including shootings and stabbings, as well as any other LBPD updates to the Department’s homepage and on the “News” tab of the Department’s website. This page will be updated as new incidents occur.
Here’s a recap of incidents occurring last night:
- Stabbing – 1000 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue - On Feb. 3, 2023 at approximately 10:28 p.m., officers responded to the 1000 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue regarding an assault with a deadly weapon. Upon arrival, officers contacted a male adult victim with non-life-threatening stab wounds to the upper body. Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for his injuries. Responding officers attempted to make contact with a male adult suspect, however he fled the scene on foot through a nearby alleyway. Preliminary investigation suggests the victim was in a verbal altercation with the suspect, which resulted in the suspect stabbing the victim. Officers established a perimeter and began a search for the suspect. Officers made contact with the suspect, however the suspect refused to comply with officer commands to surrender. As a result, officers deployed a K9 Unit, a use of force occurred, and the suspect was taken into custody. The Long Beach Fire Department who were already on scene, transported the victim to a local hospital for his minor injuries. Once the suspect was medically cleared, he was transported to Long Beach City Jail where he was booked. The suspect was identified as Andrew Martinez, a 33-year-old resident of Long Beach, who was booked on one count of attempted murder and one count of resisting arrest. Bail was set at $1,000,000.
- Fatal Vehicle Collision – Atlantic Avenue and Roosevelt Road – On Feb. 4, 2023 at approximately 5:20 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Atlantic Avenue and Roosevelt Road regarding a single vehicle collision, which resulted in the death of a female adult. Preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was traveling southbound on Atlantic Avenue when it left the roadway collided with a tree. Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and determined a female adult passenger deceased. The male adult driver was transported to a local hospital for his serious injuries but is in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing, and a news release with additional information is forthcoming.
