As part of our ongoing commitment to external communications and providing valuable information to our community, the Department posts preliminary information about incidents that occurred the previous evening, including shootings and stabbings, as well as any other LBPD updates to the Department’s homepage and on the “News” tab of the Department’s website. This page will be updated as new incidents occur.

Here’s a recap of incidents occurring last night:

• Officers investigate a shooting and arrest suspects: On August 8, 2023, at approximately 5:10 p.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of 20th Street and Orange Avenue regarding a shots call. Upon arrival, officers observed two male subjects running from the scene, who matched the suspect descriptions given by calling parties. After a short foot pursuit, both subjects were detained. Through their investigation, officers determined both male subjects were suspects involved in the shooting. Officers located evidence, including bullet casings, strike marks and recovered a firearm (see photo below), indicating a shooting had occurred. The preliminary investigation indicates a male adult victim had been driving in the area of 19th Street and Orange Avenue when one of the male adult suspects shot his vehicle. Both suspects were arrested and transported to the Long Beach City Jail for booking.
  The first suspect was identified as Knowledge Strikland, a 18-year-old resident of Long Beach, who was booked for one count of assault with a firearm and one count of resisting arrest. Bail was set at $50,000.
  
  The second suspect was identified as a 16-year-old male.
  
  No injuries were reported, and the investigation is ongoing.

• Officers investigate a shooting: On August 9, 2023 at approximately 2:26 a.m., officers responded to the 1000 block of Redondo Avenue regarding a shots call. The preliminary investigation revealed a male adult victim was in an alley when he was in verbal altercation with a male adult suspect, which escalated when the suspect fired a gun into the air. The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived. Officers located evidence, including bullet casings, indicating a shooting had occurred. Suspect information and the motive for the shooting is under investigation. No injuries have been reported and the investigation is ongoing.
