As part of our ongoing commitment to external communications and providing valuable information to our community, the Department posts preliminary information about incidents that occurred the previous evening, including shootings and stabbings, as well as any other LBPD updates to the Department’s homepage and on the “News” tab of the Department’s website. This page will be updated as new incidents occur.

Officers investigate a no-hit shooting: On August 5, 2023, at approximately 1:26 a.m., officers responded to the 1100 block of Gardenia Avenue regarding a robbery. The preliminary investigation indicates that the male adult victim was walking on the sidewalk when he was approached by a male adult suspect, who demanded his wallet. The suspect swung a gun at the victim, hitting him twice in the upper body and the victim gave the suspect his wallet. The suspect fired the gun once into the air and fled the scene before officers arrived. Officers located evidence, including bullet casings, indicating a shooting had occurred. Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and treated the victim for non-life-threatening injuries to the upper body. Suspect information is under investigation. The investigation is ongoing.

Officers investigate a domestic violence with SWAT activation and arrest suspect: On August 5, 2023, at approximately 6:19 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 1800 block of Canal Avenue regarding a domestic violence call. Upon arrival, officers located a female adult victim with minor injury to her upper body. Long Beach Fire Department personnel provided medical aid to the victim. The preliminary investigation indicates that the male adult suspect physically assaulted the victim; the victim then ran away and called the police. Officers observed the suspect flee into the house. Officers established a perimeter around the home and attempted to call out the suspect, but he did not respond. SWAT and negotiators responded to the scene. Nearby residents were evacuated and/or sheltered in place. The suspect surrendered and officers took him into custody. The investigation is ongoing.
