ARMED CARJACKING RESULTS IN THE ARREST OF PROHIBITED POSSESSOR AND RECOVERY OF UNSERIALIZED FIREARM

Release Date: 2022-12-16

Yesterday at approximately 12:32 p.m., officers responded to the area of Anaheim Street and Pacific Avenue regarding an armed carjacking. Upon arrival, officers contacted a male adult victim, who stated he was inside his parked vehicle on Anaheim Street when he was approached by a grey vehicle driven by an unknown male adult suspect, along with a female adult suspect in the passenger seat. The male suspect brandished a firearm and demanded the suspect’s vehicle—in which the victim complied with the suspect’s demands. The suspects fled northbound on Anaheim street in the stolen vehicle.

A short while later, a vehicle matching the description of the stolen vehicle was spotted by patrol officers. Officers attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, however the suspect fled in the vehicle, resulting in a brief department-authorized pursuit—which ended when the stolen vehicle crashed into an unoccupied parked car. The male suspect fled on foot, while the female suspect remained in the vehicle and was subsequently detained and arrested. Officers established a perimeter and began a search for the suspect, which resulted in the location, detention, and subsequent arrest of the male suspect.

During their investigation, officers discovered two loaded firearms in the stolen vehicle, one of which was unserialized, and several rounds of ammunition. The suspects were transported to Long Beach City jail for booking. The first suspect was identified as Jose De Jesus Diaz, a 34-year-old resident of Long Beach, who was booked on one count of carjacking, one count of carrying a concealed a weapon, one count of carrying a loaded firearm in a public place, one count of prohibited possessor in possession of a firearm, and violation of Post Release Community Supervision. Bail was set at no bail. The second suspect was identified as Jessica Renee Chavira, a 28-year-old resident of Long Beach, who was booked on one count of carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle, one count of carrying a loaded firearm in a public place, one count of carrying a loaded firearm as not the registered owner, and one count of carjacking. Bail was set at $100,000.
