Pocket Bike Education and Enforcement

At times, large groups gather in our community, using small, motorized bikes, commonly referred to as pocket bikes. Often, these groups and their activity are promoted on social media.

Use of pocket bikes is dangerous, illegal, and unwelcome on Long Beach streets. It can contribute to the following:

  • Lead to traffic collisions, injuries, and property damage.
  • Put drivers, passengers, and bystanders at risk.
  • Result in assaults and vandalism.
  • Disrupt neighborhoods and endanger public safety.
  • In some cases, participants have even blocked officers or interfered with emergency response.

The Long Beach Police Department is committed to addressing this growing
safety issue through education and enforcement. Our priority is protecting both
the public and our officers.

Laws & Enforcement
Pocket bikes are not legal for street use and do not meet highway safety
standards.

LBPD will strictly enforce the following California Vehicle Codes (CVC):
§ 473(a) CVC – Defines pocket bikes as two-wheeled motorized devices not
designed for highway use.
§ 21710 CVC – Prohibits operating a pocket bike on a sidewalk, roadway, highway, or
bicycle path.
§ 22651 CVC – Authorizes officers to impound pocket bikes operated illegally.
§ 24003 CVC – States that vehicles not meeting safety requirements (lights, brakes,
tires, etc.) are not permitted on public roads.
