                                                     Lt. Erik Herzog              Lt. Lloyd Cox

Long Beach Police Chief Robert Luna has selected Lieutenant Erik Herzog, a 27-year-veteran of the Police Department, and Lieutenant Lloyd Cox, a 34-year employee of the City of Long Beach, with 25-years as a Long Beach police officer, for the positions of Commander.

Lieutenant Herzog began his career with the Long Beach Police Department in 1990. He promoted to sergeant in 1997 and to lieutenant in 2016.

Lieutenant Herzog has worked a variety of assignments including: Patrol, Field Training Officer Program, Gang Enforcement, Office of the Chief of Police, Organized Crime, FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, and Homicide. His most recent assignment has been with the Special Enforcement Section, where he has also served as the acting commander of the Field Support Division, which includes the Police Service Dog Unit, S.W.A.T, Air Support, Traffic Section, and Special Events & Planning.

Lieutenant Herzog holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Vocational Education from California State University, Long Beach, and is a graduate of the Sherman Block Leadership Institute, USC Safe Communities Institute and Force Science Institute. Lt. Herzog will begin his new assignment as the Commander of the East Patrol Division.

Lieutenant Cox began his career with the City of Long Beach in 1983 as a Recreation Specialist with Parks & Recreation. In 1985, he joined the Long Beach Police Department and served as a police dispatcher for four years, before returning to Parks & Recreation in 1989 as a Park Ranger. He was hired as a police recruit, and graduated from the police academy in 1992. He promoted to sergeant in 2001, and to lieutenant in 2006.

During his career, Lieutenant Cox has worked a variety of assignments including: Patrol, Field Training Officer Program, Academy Instructor, Information Technology, Internal Affairs, with his most recent assignment as the Lieutenant overseeing the Gang & Violent Crimes Division, which includes Homicide, Robbery, and the Career Criminal Apprehension Team.

He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Professional Studies from California State University, Long Beach, and a POST Management Certificate. Lt. Cox will begin his new assignment as the Commander of the Internal Affairs Division.

The Long Beach Police Department congratulates Lieutenant Herzog & Lieutenant Cox and wishes them continued success.

Additionally, Chief Luna has also announced command staff assignment changes that will become effective September 9, 2017. Commanders typically rotate every few years to afford them increased opportunities for community engagement and career development.
