ORIGINAL NEWS RELEASE:
On Tuesday, June 28, 2016, around 9 a.m., members of the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force requested Long Beach Police assistance when a suspect fled to the 2800 block of East 15thStreet, where a subsequent officer involved shooting occurred.
The preliminary investigation revealed the following:
- A U.S. Marshals Task Force, in which Long Beach Police participates, spotted a male adult suspect, wanted in connection with a December 2014 shooting involving multiple victims in Long Beach
- Task Force members contacted the suspect in the area of 16th Street and Temple Avenue. The suspect fled on foot and a foot pursuit ensued.
- The suspect ran into an apartment of an acquaintance, located in the 2800 block of East 15th Street
- Long Beach Police responded to assist and established a containment
- The suspect was considered armed and dangerous and the Long Beach Special Weapons and Tactics Team (S.W.A.T.) was activated
- As a precautionary measure nearby residences were evacuated while the investigation continued
- S.W.A.T. deployed and directed the suspect to exit the residence
- The suspect exited the residence and failed to comply with the officers’ verbal commands
- As the suspect began to aggressively charge the officers, intermediate force options were deployed, including a 40mm rubber baton round and a Police Service dog attached to S.W.A.T.
- The suspect continued his aggressive charge toward officers while canine Credo continued to try and stop the suspect from advancing towards officers
- As Credo fought with the suspect, the suspect produced a knife while continuing to advance towards officers. One of the officers discharged his weapon to protect himself and the other officers from the suspect. Both the suspect and Credo were struck by gunfire.
- Long Beach Fire Department transported the suspect to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased
- Credo was transported by his handler to a local veterinarian hospital where he succumbed to his injuries
- The knife was recovered at the scene
The Los Angeles County Coroner is conducting an independent investigation. The identity of the suspect will be released after next of kin has been notified.
The Police Department thoroughly reviews all use of force incidents through a rigorous multi-step process that evaluates legal, policy, tactical, and equipment issues. Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation of the shooting, as they do with all officer involved shootings that occur in Los Angeles County that result in injury or death.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION – SHOOTING WITH MULTIPLE VICTIMS:
The suspect involved in the officer involved shooting was wanted in connection with this incident:
- On January 26, 2014, around 7:20 p.m., officers on routine patrol heard shots in the area of Anaheim Street and Lewis Avenue
- Officers determined a shooting occurred and located three male adult victims
- Long Beach Fire Department transported the victims, with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries, to local hospitals
- Assisting officers spotted a vehicle, which was possibly related. They attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the vehicle failed to yield, and a pursuit ensued
- The pursuit terminated when the vehicle collided with an unoccupied parked vehicle in the 1300 block of Lewis Avenue
- The three occupants fled on foot and a foot pursuit ensued until officers lost sight of them
- A perimeter was established and a search was conducted with air support assistance
- Officers located and detained a male adult believed to be the driver
- Another suspect was believed to be in a residence and SWAT was activated
- The residence was searched with negative results
- Ren Sry, 32 years old and resident of Long Beach, was booked into Long Beach City Jail for felony evading, hit and run property damage, violation of parole, and an outstanding warrant. The Los Angeles County District Attorney filed charges of three counts of attempt murder, one count of felon in possession of a firearm, and one count of evading recklessly. He is currently being held in Los Angeles County Jail pending trial.
- The other two suspects were outstanding
- The incident is being investigated as gang-related
- Through the course of the investigation, detectives identified a second suspect. Detectives presented their case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, which filed three counts attempt murder against him. Subsequently, a warrant for his arrest was issued in April 2016. This individual is the same suspect involved in the 6/28/16 officer involved shooting.
- The third suspect remains outstanding and the investigation is ongoing
