On Saturday, May 24, 2014, at approximately 1:47 p.m., Long Beach Police were dispatched to the area of South Street and Downey Avenue regarding an injury traffic collision.

Arriving officers discovered an unconscious male adult driver trapped inside a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis. The preliminary investigation revealed the Grand Marquis was struck by a 1995 Lexus ES300 as the Grand Marquis exited a nearby parking lot. The Grand Marquis, driven by an 89-year-old Long Beach resident, entered onto South Street and was struck by the Lexus, which was traveling eastbound South Street.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded, extracted the Grand Marquise driver, and subsequently transported him to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The driver is not being identified pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the Lexus, a 19-year-old resident of Compton, was uninjured. He was interviewed and released at the scene. The invetigation remains ongoing.
