This page will be a resource for the public to learn more about enforcement efforts, arrests, and commendable events and will be updated as new incidents occur.

Here’s a recap of incidents occurring last night:

  • Officers Investigate Fatal Shooting- Last night, at approximately 10:35 a.m., officers responded to the 4300 block of East Ocean Blvd regarding a shooting.  Upon arrival, officers located a male adult with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Long Beach Fire Department responded and determined the victim to be deceased from his injury. Detectives are on scene and the investigation is ongoing. A news release with additional information regarding the incident will be published later today on this page
  • Officers Arrest Man Regarding the Negligent Discharge of a Firearm - Yesterday evening, at approximately 6:26 p.m., officers from the Long Beach Police Department were dispatched to the area of 72nd Place and Ocean Boulevard regarding a negligent discharge with a firearm incident. When officers arrived, they observed a male adult suspect standing on the jetty, just south of the 72nd Place lifeguard station. Officers on scene heard multiple gunshots being fired. Officers utilized distance, time, and cover to safely de-escalate the situation. The suspect complied with responding officers and was taken into custody without incident. Officers seized a firearm and located evidence, including casings, indicating a shooting had occurred. Through their preliminary investigation officers determined suspect discharged the firearm towards the ocean and not toward any person. The suspect was identified as Manuel Chavez, a 53-year-old resident of the City of Wilmington, who was booked for one count of possession of a firearm, and one count of discharging a firearm. He was held on zero-dollar bail. The investigation is ongoing.

This information is preliminary and is intended for early information use rather than being a formal investigative report.
