Communications Division

The Long Beach Police Department's Communications Division is responsible for the LBPD's internal and external communications, including media relations. The team is comprised of the Executive Communications Officer, four full-time civilian Public Information Officers, one full-time sworn Public Information Officer, and a team of part-time collateral Public Information Officers.

The Public Information Officers (PIO) have the responsibility of fostering professional working relationships between the Police Department and the media. They work a rotating on-call schedule and responding to the Department's media needs 24-hours a day. They ensure the coordination and handling of all television, print, radio, and internet media contacts, facilitating news interviews, and providing timely and accurate information regarding crimes or critical incidents that occur in Long Beach.

Their responsibilities include fielding multiple inquires from local, national and international media, issuing news releases and Public Information Bulletins, monitoring news stories to ensure accuracy in reporting, and coordinating high-profile news conferences. They are also tasked with keeping the Department current in the social media network, providing updated training to employees, and keeping the command staff apprised of department-related developing news stories. They have established a rapport with detectives, working with them on highly sensitive cases, and strive to fulfill the department's obligations for releasing information, while protecting the integrity of investigations.
