History
Sunnyside Cemetery opened in September, 1906.
Many of Long Beach’s early pioneers are buried. The property is the final resting place for more than 16,000 people, including Union soldiers, Japanese Americans who suffered internment during World War II, and Long Beach pioneers including C.J. Walker, the first new mayor of the 20th century and founder of Farmers and Merchants Bank.
1907: Graveyard’s first plot sold for Civil War physician Albert Rhea.
1994: Owner steals more than half of $1 million endowment. The property operates off interest from its endowment and eventually was overwhelmed with water and pest control costs.
August 20, 2019 – Long Beach City Council votes to acquire Sunnyside Cemetery.
