History

This park was Long Beach Water Department well and recharges lands purchased in 1931. Stearns Park was named after Able Stearns, who along with Don Juan Temple, bought Rancho Los Alamitos in the 1830s, land that is now east Long Beach. Parts of the site were leased in 1954 to the Association for Retarded Children and developed with the Fire Training Center. A development plan approved by City Council on June 21, 1955 included a baseball diamond, two basketball and two tennis courts and a playground. A second youth baseball diamond and a tee ball diamond were added in 2008. A community center was added in 1976. Baseball field lighting a soccer field were added in 1997 with Los Angeles County Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond Act of 1992 funds. The park fence bordering the Fire Training Center and Tucker School was replaced in 2003 with State Parks Bond Act of 2000 funds. In 2007, the freestanding restroom was replaced with a new restroom. The park name was changed from Stearns to Stearns Champions in honor of the Little League Baseball World and National Championships teams of 1992 and 1993 respectively, which had home fields at the park.
