Information

A sprawling 13.06 acre park, Hudson offers a quiet atmosphere along with two softball fields (which can be reserved through the Aquatics and Sports Office at 570-1732) and a community gardens project. In addition, Hudson Park has been recently renovated and is a popular park for adult sports leagues.

History

The City obtained the Hudson Park site from Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) in the 1977 as excess land from Elizabeth Hudson Elementary School. In exchange, the City gave Camp High Hill to LBUSD. Development funding was obtained from the California Parks Bond in 1977 and 1984. The development included a playground, two lighted baseball diamonds; with overlay football and soccer field, and a 1.5-acre community garden. The park was redeveloped in 2000, with two baseball diamonds relocated, a lighted soccer/football field, a restroom/snack building and new playground. Funding came from the Los Angeles County Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond Act of 1996, Community Development Block Grants and Park Impact Fees.

Hudson Park was part of a land swap proposal between the City and the Navy in the 1989 to 1992 period. The Navy proposed rebuilding its off base housing complex with new housing being built on the Hudson Park site, and with the Navy giving the City an equal sized area of land near Admiral Kidd Park. The proposal died when the federal government closed Long Beach Naval Station in 1992. The termination of the land swap proposal lead directly to planning for the redevelopment of Hudson Park. Hudson Park is used jointly with LBUSD Cabrillo High School physical education programs.
