8th District Senior Activities Update 3/21/2019

The senior activities at the Expo Arts Center were featured in the Long Beach Post, as the City's Senior Citizen Advisory Commission recommended funding to enhance and possibly expand the program.  This program has been made possible with countless volunteer hours of our 8th District Senior Advisory Commission, offering free activities for the past three years.

Global Green Market Street Assessment Draft 8/31/2016 Two years ago, community members in the neighborhoods near Market Street got together for a series of visioning sessions about the Market Street corridor between Atlantic Avenue and the Los Angeles River. Global Green then wrote this draft assessment, outlining some of the possibilities for enhancing the area.  Global Green's findings will help to inform future projects in the area.

Important Update Regarding Long Beach Airport Flights 12/1/2015 The City Manager has called a study session for Tuesday, December 8 to discuss the flight slot allocation at the Long Beach Airport. The latest annual noise budget report required by the Airport Noise Compatibility Ordinance indicates that nine additional daily air carrier flights can be added under the allowable noise limits.

Third Annual Eighth District Toy Drive 12/2/2014

Councilmember Al Austin is once again partnering with local businesses to collect toys for local families during the holiday season.

Donations of new unwrapped toys may be dropped off in the collection boxes at participating businesses from now until December 12.  The donated items will go to local families.

MTA to Refurbish Four Blue Line Stations 9/19/2014

The stations being refurbished include:

  • 1st Street
  • 5th Street
  • Pacific Avenue
  • Downtown Long Beach

A free bus shuttle will link the four closed stations with Anaheim St. Station. Train service will continue northward to Los Angeles from Anaheim Station.

The CoolCalifornia City Challenge is a statewide competition engaging thousands of households in cities across California to save energy, reduce their carbon footprints and help build more vibrant and sustainable communities.
Long Beach is one of ten cities competing this year. Prize money will be awarded to the top three teams in the city.
