City Council Moves Forward with Airport FIS Facility with 6-3 Vote
1/20/2016
In a year that included a healthy conversation on the City's Noise Ordinance and the number of flight allotments at LGB, residents of neighborhoods adjacent to the airport have become increasingly concerned, vocal, and active. As a representative of several of these neighborhoods - Bixby Highlands, Bixby Terrace, and California Heights - and as someone who disagrees with the need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to study additions that our residents do not want and our city does not need, I joined my colleagues councilmembers Al Austin and Daryl Supernaw in voting "no" on the proposal before us. Moving forward, the city will contract with Jacobs Engineering and pay an estimated $350,000 for the study.

Picking a set of finalists from that field is a daunting and difficult task. "After two months of reading and deliberating and receiving invaluable advice and support from more than 40 grantees and experts who we called reviewers, today we’re announcing 158 finalists in this year’s challenge. "The finalists have until the end of January to submit full applications."

Public Safety Announcement: Celebratory Gunfire is Illegal

Discharging a firearm into the air has resulted in injuries and deaths across the country. In most instances when a falling bullet strikes a person, it does so in the head or upper body and is likely to cause serious injury or death. In California, discharging a firearm into the air is a felony and punishable by up to three years in state prison. If a stray bullet strikes someone, more serious consequences exist, including the possibility of the shooter being arrested for murder.

Safe Driving Tips for This Holiday Season
12/8/2015
With the holiday season in full swing, the Long Beach Police Department encourages everyone to follow all traffic laws, always pay attention whether you are a motorist, a bicyclist or a pedestrian, and do not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Officers will be looking for impaired driving throughout the holiday season and several DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols are planned. Additionally, vehicles that have been involved in DUI crashes are displayed throughout Long Beach with signage that reminds drivers of the consequences of choosing to drive while impaired. In anticipation of increased travel and predicted wet winter, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) is sharing this important message with travelers: Drive safely and be prepared for inclement weather at all times. The holiday season is one of the busiest travel times of the year with the likelihood of an increased number of vehicle crashes due, in part, to the influx of drivers on the roads. With a bit of foresight and some careful planning, you can help eliminate the stress of typical holiday travel and enjoy this time of year as planned.

Many regional resources are committed to investigating the mass shooting incident in San Bernardino. Although no threat to Long Beach has been identified, the Police Department remains in close communication with our regional law enforcement partners to make ongoing assessments as the investigation progresses. One of the most important roles that community members serve is that of reporting suspicious activity - "if you see something, say something." Call the Police Department at (562) 435-6711 to report.
