Mayor Richardson's Bio

Rex Richardson is the 29th Mayor of Long Beach, California, the 41st largest city in America and home to the Port of Long Beach, California State University, Long Beach, and Space Beach, one of the nation’s fastest growing space and aerospace hubs. He holds the distinction of serving as Long Beach’s first African American Mayor.

As Mayor, Richardson has led an ambitious agenda to expand opportunity and prepare Long Beach for the future. His signature initiatives include Elevate 28, the largest infrastructure investment program in the city’s history, positioning Long Beach for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond, and Grow Long Beach, a long-term strategy to diversify the local economy and drive inclusive growth across advanced manufacturing, aerospace, clean technology, healthcare, and logistics.

A recognized regional and national leader, Richardson serves on the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), helping oversee one of the nation’s largest public transportation systems and advance mobility investments across Los Angeles County. He also serves as National Co-Chair of Mayors and CEOs for U.S. Housing Investment, a bipartisan coalition advancing housing solutions nationwide. He previously served as Chair of the Los Angeles County Affordable Housing Solutions Agency (LACAHSA) and as President of the Southern California Association of Governments, the nation’s largest metropolitan planning organization.

On the national stage, Richardson serves on the Advisory Board of the United States Conference of Mayors, where he helps shape policy solutions that strengthen cities across America.

Prior to becoming Mayor, Richardson served two terms on the Long Beach City Council representing the 9th District and two terms as Vice Mayor. Throughout his public service, he has worked alongside residents, businesses, and community organizations to expand opportunity, improve public safety, strengthen neighborhoods, and deliver lasting investments that improve quality of life.

Richardson and his wife, Dr. Nina Richardson, are raising their two daughters, Alina and Mila, in North Long Beach. He believes every resident, regardless of their circumstance, deserves the opportunity to thrive.
