Tips for staying safe in the heat:
Avoid the sun – Stay indoors, if possible, during hours when the sun is strongest.
Drink plenty of fluids – Especially if you’ve been sweating, it is important to drink 2 to 4 glasses of water every hour during extreme heat.
Replace salts and minerals – Drink fruit juice or a sports beverage to replace salt and minerals that you sweat out during exercise or heavy work in the heat.
Avoid alcohol – It can cause dehydration, increasing the risk of heat illness.
Pace yourself – Start physical activity gradually and rest if you feel lightheaded, weak, or faint.
Wear appropriate clothing – Wear a wide-brimmed hat and light-colored, loose-fitting clothing while outdoors.
Stay cool indoors – Visit air-conditioned public spaces like libraries to keep cool if you don’t have air-conditioning.
Look out for your neighbors – Especially if they are older or otherwise vulnerable, make sure your friends and neighbors have the support they need during heat waves.
Keep pets safe - Make sure pets have plenty of water and shade. |
