Alamitos Neighborhood Library

In 1895, a group of women in the Alamitos Townsite, not yet a part of Long Beach, formed the Alamitos Library Association. In 1897, real estate magnate Jotham Bixby donated the land at 1836 E. Third Street to the Alamitos Library Association and funds were raised to construct its first library building. The library opened later that year and became a branch of the Long Beach Public Library in 1910. The current library, a 7,475-square-foot building reportedly inspired by a Spanish castle, opened in January 1929. In 1997, the Alamitos Neighborhood Library celebrated 100 years of service to the community.
