Tech To-Go
You can borrow Chromebooks and MiFis (mobile Wi-Fi hotspots) with your library card! Check out either device for up to 3 weeks.
Patrons must be 18 years or older and have a full-access library card in good standing to borrow Tech To-Go items.
How to Borrow
- Review the Lending Agreement. By placing a reservation, you agree to comply with the rules and guidelines.
- Place the device you want on hold.
- Use the Library catalog or call an LBPL location to place a device on hold. When you place a hold, you are adding yourself to a waitlist.
- Chromebooks do not include internet access. For internet access, you must place an additional hold request on a MiFi.
- Wait times will vary depending on the waitlists. Chromebook and MiFi requests may not be fulfilled at the same time.
- When your hold is ready, pick up the device at the location you selected.
- You will receive a notification from the Library when your hold is ready for pickup.
- Take your library card with you and check out the Tech To-Go device at the checkout desk.
- Before leaving the library, check that all items are in the bag or box and working.
- Let staff know immediately if something is missing or not working.
Chromebooks are laptop computers that run on ChromeOS, an operating system from Google that is essentially the Chrome web browser. Our Chromebooks do not include internet access. To connect to the internet, you will need a MiFi, private internet access, or access to public Wi-Fi.
MiFis are wireless routers that act as mobile Wi-Fi hotspot devices.
Place a hold by calling a LBPL location or submit a request online through the Library catalog.
If you need internet access for the Chromebook, place a separate request on a MiFi.
When you place a hold, you are adding yourself to a waitlist. You will receive a notification from the Library when your hold is ready for pickup. Wait times will vary depending on the waitlists. Chromebook and MiFi requests may not be fulfilled at the same time.
Borrowers must be 18 years or older with a Full Access library card and have less than $10 in fees. If you don't have a card, you can easily sign up for a library card by bringing a photo ID and proof of your California address to any LBPL location.
Parents or guardians are responsible for the Internet information selected and/or accessed by their children.
Items can be checked out for 3 weeks. If there are no hold requests, the item can be renewed up to 4 times.
Once an item is overdue, the Library may deactivate the device. Items 21 days overdue will be billed at full replacement cost.
Items must be returned during open hours and may be returned to any location.
Do not return these items in book drops. Items returned to the book drop or not returned directly to Library staff will result in suspension of Tech To-Go borrowing privileges.
Please contact the Library immediately if your device is lost. Patrons will be responsible for the full replacement cost.
It is free to borrow a device! But, if it is not returned, the person who checked it out will be charged the full replacement cost. Review the lending agreement for more information.
No, there is no data limit on the MiFi.
The Library respects a person's right to privacy. We trust that our patrons will use the devices in a lawful manner that does not violate the Library's Code of Conduct. The Library does not view, use, share, or save any information from the use of the Chromebooks or the MiFis.
