The schedule for the upcoming weekend closures of Runway 12-30, Long Beach Airport's main commercial runway, has been delayed. The runway will be closed daily over the course of two weekends due to construction activities being conducted near the runway. As a result of this closure, neighborhoods near the airport may notice a change in aircraft flight activity.
The construction work is required to update the geometry of Taxiway C and associated taxiways in accordance with the LGB Airfield Geometry Study to meet current FAA design standards and enhance the overall safety of the airfield. It is LGB’s obligation as a FAR Part 139 airport, and as required by FAA grant assurances, to maintain safe and serviceable movement areas.
Airport Engineering staff had originally planned to conduct the construction work in September 2020, but due to the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the timeline for the construction project was moved up to May 2020 because commercial operations are far fewer than they could potentially be in September 2020. This generates less noise impacts on the surrounding communities.
The runway closures will begin on Friday, May 15, and the second weekend closure will begin on Friday, May 29, 2020. The closure schedule will be as follows:
- Friday, May 15 at 10 p.m. – Monday, May 18 at 7 a.m.
- Runway open daily from Monday, May 18 at 7 a.m. – Friday, May 29 at 10 p.m.
- Friday, May 29 at 10 p.m. – Monday, June 1 at 7 a.m.
