The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced its new online registration system for small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) is now active. Owners must register UAS that weigh more than 0.55 pounds and less than 55 pounds if they are being flown outdoors for hobby or recreation.
When flying within 5 miles of any airport, UAS operators must contact the airport operator or airport traffic control tower in advance. UAS operators flying within 5 miles of Long Beach Airport must contact the air traffic control tower at (562) 424-7128 with prior notice of the operation.
Owners that have operated aircraft prior to December 21, 2015 must register UAS no later than February 19, 2016. For new owners, registration is required before the first outdoor flight.
