LB Fixit Clinics

Program Overview
The Department of Energy and Environmental Services, in partnership with Algalita Marine Research and Education, Pedal Movement, Long Beach Time Exchange and the LB Reuses coalition, is hosting Long Beach Fixit Clinics at no cost to City residents. These volunteer-led repair workshops offer residents a chance to get hands-on help fixing broken household items. Long Beach Fixit Clinics are staffed by volunteer Fixit Coaches who share their time, tools, and expertise to help assess, troubleshoot, and attempt repairs on everyday household items.
Fixit Clinics are designed as learn-by-doing workshops, where residents work alongside volunteer Fixit Coaches to understand how their items function and how they might be fixed. Together, residents and coaches open items, diagnose issues, and work toward possible repairs while building skills along the way. Even if a repair doesn’t succeed, residents leave with useful knowledge to help troubleshoot future issues.
The Long Beach Fixit Clinics are open to all ages, and minors must be accompanied by an adult, giving residents the opportunity to learn together and promote multigenerational knowledge sharing and better consumer habits.
Repair is an effective way to reduce waste, save money, conserve natural resources, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This program also supports the City of Long Beach’s waste and emission reduction goals outlined in the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan.

Volunteer at the Long Beach Fixit Clinic:
Interested in volunteering? Please join us! Volunteers, also known as Fixit Coaches, support residents during hands-on, guided repair workshops by sharing their time, tool expertise, and knowledge so residents can learn valuable repair skills.
You do not need to be an expert to be a Fixit Coach. Coaches simply need to feel comfortable opening things up, troubleshooting alongside residents, and sharing what they know to support learning, build confidence, and work toward possible repairs.
As a Fixit Coach, you’ll help residents by providing:
- Guidance on selecting and safely using tools appropriate for their item
- Encouragement to explore and open their broken items to better understand how they work
- Space to talk through how the item was used and how it stopped working, often uncovering helpful clues for troubleshooting
- A supportive approach that allows residents to lead the repair, troubleshoot issues, and disassemble items themselves

Interested in hosting your own Fixit Clinic?
Host your own event with this guide made by Fixit Clinic: Fixit Clinic: Start a Clinic
-
Are there online resources that can help guide me in repair?
Yes, you can view this repair guide from iFixit, an American e-commerce and how-to website that publishes free online repair guides and teardowns of consumer electronics and gadgets, while also selling repair parts, tools, and accessories, with a mission to promote repair and reduce e-waste.
-
Does preregistering guarantee a spot?
Preregistering for the Fixit Clinic does not guarantee your place in line, as we also accommodate walk-ins. However, preregistration helps our volunteers plan ahead and bring the right tools for the right fixes, giving your item the best chance at repair! Please note that no one will be added to the wait list after 2 p.m.
-
Will you accept walk-ins?
We will accept walk-ins and add you to the queue, but priority is given to those who have preregistered for the event, therefore walk-ins are subject to longer wait times.
-
How many items can I bring to the event?
Please bring one item that needs to be repaired. Volunteers will attempt to repair it, but not every attempt is successful. Additional items brought to the event will be listed as walk-ins and handled on a case-by-case basis. Expect longer wait times for walk-in items, and note that no items will be added to the waitlist after 2 p.m.
-
What items do you not repair?
We try our best when it comes to repair, yet not everything is made to be repaired. We have a 70% success rate. There are some items that our program is not set up to take. One rule is if you cannot carry it in, please do not bring it. Please contact LBReuses@gmail.com if you have questions about an item you’d like to bring.
Here's a list of items we cannot repair at our clinics.
- Mobile Phones and Tablets
- Computer software
- Any Mac or Apple products
- Printer

How can I volunteer with the Long Beach Fixit Clinics?
Long Beach Fixit Clinics is all about neighbors helping neighbors. When you RSVP, you can choose to volunteer for the day either as a volunteer Fixit coach or as a support volunteer. We'll keep volunteers updated about upcoming volunteer opportunities. You can also fill out the volunteer interest form to become part of our volunteer base for future events.
-
Does this cost money?
This event is at no cost for residents to attend, but it is not a drop-off repair service. Instead, it is a hands-on workshop where residents can learn how to repair their items with support from volunteer Fixit Coaches.
-
What if my item needs a replacement part?
Because this is a no cost event, we do not provide replacement parts. If your item requires additional or replacement parts, you will be responsible for purchasing and bringing those parts on the day of the event.
-
Do you take donations of tools and supplies?
Yes! If you have any old tools you don’t need, please email us at LBReuses@gmail.com to arrange drop-off.
