What is a Waste Sort and Why is it Important?
Conducting a waste sort helps to ensure we are recycling right and recovering as much recyclable material as possible. A waste sort involves selecting samples of your trash and sorting out the recyclable materials from the non-recyclable materials, and categorizing recyclable materials by type. This helps us understand what is actually being recycled, and how much is being lost.

#LBWasteSort Challenge:
From Monday, May 1 through Wednesday, May 31, conduct a waste sort at home and share a photo to get a chance to receive a free set of reusables (a metal straw, utensils kit, a Swedish dishcloth, and a recycled cotton tote bag).
How to submit your waste sort photo:
- Email lbrecycles@longbeach.gov OR
- Share on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram and tag @LBRecycles and #LBWasteSort in your post
- NOTE: If using social media, please make sure your social media account is public in order for your tag and/or message to be seen.
Up to ten (10) winners will be picked on Thursday, June 1st and contacted via social media or email.
