Building Code Adoption
Beginning on January 1, 2020, the City of Long Beach is required by State law to enforce the 2019 Edition of California Building Standards Code, also known as Title 24 of the California Codes of Regulations.
Every three years, the State adopts new model codes, known collectively as the California Building Standards Code, to establish uniform standards for the construction and maintenance of buildings, electrical systems, plumbing systems, mechanical systems, and fire and life safety systems. Sections 17922, 17958 and 18941.5 of the California Health and Safety Code require that the latest edition of the California Building Standards code and Uniform Housing Code apply to local construction 180 days after publication.
All architects, engineers, designers, developers, owners, and contractors must be familiar with the codes in effect at the time of plan submittal. As required by State law, the City of Long Beach will not approve projects that do not comply with the codes in effect at the time of plan submittal. All projects submitted on or before or December 31, 2019, are permitted to comply with the 2016 Edition of the California Building Standards Code.
For additional information, view the Long Beach Building Standard Code page.
The 2019 Edition of the California Building Standards Code will be adopted by the California Building Standards Commission and published on or about July 1, 2019.
The City of Long Beach is conducting public meetings to obtain comments concerning the latest edition of the California Building Standards Code, including local amendments that will go into effect on January 1, 2020. Public meetings will be conducted at the upcoming Long Beach Board of Examiners, Appeals and Condemnation hearings.
The Board meets on the third Monday of the month (as needed) at 1:30 p.m. in the Code Enforcement Conference Room, 100 W. Broadway, Suite 400, Long Beach, CA 90802. Code Enforcement staff may be contacted at (562) 570-CODE (2633).
