Classified Service

Apply

Start by submitting your application for the position you're interested in. You can find job classification and salary information at the City's Descriptions and Compensation page. Be sure to include all required documents at the time of submission. Any supporting materials must clearly show your name or other identifying information.

Review
The Talent Acquisition (TA) team will review your application to determine whether you meet the minimum qualifications, including the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.

Examination
If you meet the minimum qualifications, the TA team will contact you and invite you to participate in the examination process. Depending on the job, this may include a written exam, an oral interview, a performance test, or an appraisal interview.

Referred
Your application and examination results will be evaluated, and scores will be calculated as needed. Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) may assist in this review. Any applicable hiring preferences will be applied at this stage. Once assessments are complete, you’ll be notified of your placement (band, rank, or qualification status) on an eligible list. This list is used to fill vacancies and remains active for a minimum of 6 months, and up to 3 years, depending on the classification. Departments must follow applicable Rules and Regulations subject to each classification when hiring from the eligible list.

Interview
When a department has a vacancy, they will review the eligible list and contact selected candidates. Additional interviews or evaluations may be conducted as part of the department’s hiring decision.

Onboard
If selected, you will receive a conditional offer of employment. At that point, you’ll begin the onboarding process, which will include background checks and completion of necessary employment documents.

Hired
Once onboarding is complete, the hiring department will coordinate your official start date. New employees serve a probationary period of 6 months (or 12 months for Police and Fire positions). After successful completion of the probationary period, you will attain permanent status in your classification and begin accruing seniority.

Recruitment Process FAQs

  • How does application screening work?

Application Screening is a procedure used to qualify individuals for a recruitment that may have a test component for Classified positions. During this process, requirements such as experience, training, or education of each applicant are reviewed. Applicants are encouraged to clearly state their qualifying background on their application form.

  • What is a Written Examination?

A written examination is used to test specific technical knowledge related to a certain job. The test may consist of any combination of multiple choice, true/false, completion or identification items. Since many of these written examinations are job-specific, a careful review of the job announcement will provide you with an overview of the technical knowledge needed for the job.

  • How are interviews conducted?

An interview is conducted by a panel of subject matter experts who evaluate a person\'s knowledge and skills, a person’s employment background, and other qualifying factors necessary for the job being sought. Therefore, it is important to arrange your thoughts and comments carefully and to know exactly what you are going to say. You do not need to bring anything with you unless directed by Human Resources staff. Remember to dress appropriately for an interview.

  • What are Performance Tests?

A performance test may be required for applicants to demonstrate a skill or ability which is essential for a job. For these types of examinations, applicants will need to train and practice to increase their dexterity, strength, skill or accuracy. The job announcement provides an indication of the types of performance activities which will be included in these types of tests.

  • What happens after the Examination?

We will email your examination results to you, with further instructions. If you pass all parts of the examination, your name will be placed on an eligible list for at least (6) six months and up to (3) three years. Applicants with the highest overall scores are scheduled first for final selection interviews in City departments with vacancies. Those with the highest scores have the best chance of getting hired. All candidates remaining on the eligible list move up the list whenever someone above them is hired.
